By steve anyebe

Recently, Joy FM Otukpo announced the participation of a special personality on its Thursday program ‘Education in Focus’. According to Onyilokwu Edeh, the erudite MC 014, who anchors the weekly live phone-in program, Joy 96.5 had a “big fish” in their studio that afternoon.
The “big fish” turned out to be Professor Innocent Achanya Ujah mni, pioneer Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), the first ever University of Health Sciences in Nigeria. By the way, Prof Ujah is at the same time President of the Nigerian Medical Association(NMA). Onyilokwu Edeh must have been beside himself in the studio that afternoon, because his radio program must have seemed to him like coming face to face with two very powerful persons in charge of two large institutions. It is not everyday a radio journalist has the fortune of interacting with such men of caliber. Only that this time, Prof Innocent Ujah was wearing these two large caps all at once.
Prof Ujah once again bequeathed himself very well, as evidenced by caller after caller thanking him for the work he has so far done at FUHSO. Many more prayed for longevity of live for him, as well as excellent health to continue with his exemplary disposition.
The Professor of Gynaecology, in a down-to-earth manner, answered questions relating to the very interesting story of how FUHSO has come to be, the hurdles they had to scale, the frustrations they encountered, and the various roles played by different people. He also talked of staff recruitment, students admission, work on the permanent site at Akwete-Akpa, as well as the existing cordial relationship with host communities.
One point, however, stuck out like a sore thumb from the great radio interaction when Prof Ujah made a remarkable announcement to members of the listening public that nobody should ever give any monetary inducements towards securing admission or and employment at FUHSO. The Vice Chancellor informed Joy FM listeners that the University was poised to block and adequately deal with scammers, pointing out that already two people implicated in an employment scam had been handed over to the Police in Otukpo for investigation.

Outside the radio program, the Head of Security(HOS) at FUHSO, Mr Ralph Ameh, fsi, told the media that FUHSO received a letter dated 4th June, 2021, purported to have been written from the office of the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission(FCC) soliciting for employment for Professor James Agena and Mrs Okenyi Herietta, as Lecturer and administrative staff respectively.
According to the HOS, the management of the University undertook a routine check on the letter from the Federal Character Commission and came up with the shocking discovery that the letter did not emanate from the FCC. They were allegedly forged. Nonetheless, in order to get to the root of the alleged scam, FUHSO went ahead and invited both applicants for interview.
During the “interview” at the premises of FUHSO, Otada campus, it was further revealed that one man in Nsukka(Benson Idakwo), had forged the incriminating letter to assist them secure jobs at FUHSO, a deal that cost the Prof two hundred and fifty thousand naira, though the lady claimed she did not part with any money.
Mr Ameh informed journalists that the Professor of Political Science from Ebonyi State University, and the lady had since been handed over to the Police for further investigation and necessary action.

Epilogue — News monitored on Joy FM on 23/09/2021 indicated that Professor James Agena, Mrs Okenyi Herietta, and Benson Idakwo of Nsukka, have been charged at Otukpo Magistrate Court 1 for impersonation and forgery. According to the radio news, all of them pleaded guilty to the charges and the trial Judge admitted them to bail at the sum of two hundred thousand naira each, while the case was adjourned to another date.
